How-To Block Work – Instructions and Video Tutorial

To block or not to block. That is always the question.

If I’m being honest, I’m torn on when to block vs. when to pull out my iron and give it a quick press. There are some projects where blocking is a must – either the material cannot stand up to heat or the press would lose the detail. This is how I go through the process that has worked for me. There are a few methods out there so take from this what works for you! Comment and let me know what you think.

Here is what you need to get started:

  1. Your WIP!
  2. Gentle soap – look out for soap specific for fibre arts such as quilting, needlepoint, crochet, knitting. I like Orvus WA Quilt Soap but you should be able to find something similar at your local craft store.
  3. Luke warm water
  4. Blocking Mat / foam mats & Pins. I like these but any mat you can pin WIPs to without any transfer of colours
