These video game inspired crochet patterns have been some of the most requested makes in our house — my son is absolutely obsessed with them and they’re genuinely so fun to crochet. The mushroom and the star are perfect companion pieces, and both work up quickly enough that you can make the whole set in a weekend. 🎮

Both patterns are beginner friendly, use the same yarn and hook, and make the most fun gift for any gamer kid (or adult!) in your life. Free written patterns for both are included right here on this page.

What You’ll Need — Both Patterns

Both the mushroom and the star use the same materials — grab everything at once and make the full set!

Pattern 1 — Video Game Inspired Crochet Mushroom

This adorable crochet mushroom is inspired by the classic power-up character from everyone’s favourite video games. Make it in Spring Green for a 1-Up style or Hot Red for a Big-Up style — or get creative with any colour you love!

Fasten off, weave tail through final stitches to close the hole and hide the rest inside the mushroom.

Spots (make 5)

With white yarn:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: inc in each sc around (12)
Rnd 3: sc in next sc, inc in next sc around (18)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew four spots to mushroom between Rnds 12 and 23, then sew one on top.

Eyes (make 2)

With black yarn: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook to end. Fasten off.

Sew eyes directly below and centred to one of the white spots. Use tapestry needle to add a white sparkle to each eye.

Pattern 2 — Video Game Inspired Crochet Star

The star is the perfect companion to the mushroom — and just as satisfying to make. Worked as two identical pieces that are sewn together and stuffed, it has a lovely dimensional shape that’s surprisingly easy to achieve.

Abbreviations

  • Ch — Chain
  • Rnd — Round
  • sc — Single crochet
  • ss — Slip stitch
  • FO — Fasten off
  • sc2tog — Single crochet two stitches together (decrease)

Star Pattern (Make 2)

With bright yellow yarn. Work in the round until specified.

Ch 1 or use magic circle
Rnd 1: Work 10 sc in circle
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (20)
Rnd 3: *sc 3, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (25)
Rnd 4: *sc 4, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (30)

Rnd 7: *sc 7, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (45)
Rnd 8: *sc 8, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around (50)

⬇️ No longer work in the round — work flat for each star point

Row 1: 10 sc, ch 1, turn
Row 2: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn
Row 3: sc2tog, 6 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn
Row 4: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn
Row 5: sc2tog, 4 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn
Row 6: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn
Row 7: sc2tog, 2 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn
Row 8: sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn
Row 9: sc2tog 2 times, ch 1, turn
Row 10: sc2tog
Row 11: ss down the side

Repeat Rows 1–11 four more times to complete all 5 star points. Fasten off.

Assembly

Sew the seams of the two star pieces together, stuffing as you go. Take your time with the points — a little extra stuffing in each tip helps them hold their shape beautifully.

Eyes (make 2)

With black yarn: Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook to end. Fasten off. Sew onto the front of the star and add a white sparkle with your tapestry needle.

Make the Full Set!

The mushroom and star look amazing displayed together — in a nursery, on a bookshelf, or as part of a themed gift basket for a gamer in your life. Since they use the same yarn and hook you can make both back to back without putting anything away. 🎮
