Softee Striped Socks – Free Crochet Pattern

This is one of the most rewarding patterns you will ever make! These #socks are worked up with a #SeedStitch pattern that creates a soft and cushy sock that your feet will thank you for! This pattern has been in the works for over a year and you all helped me land the final few details. So many of you commented and left me very helpful suggestions that I took to heart #GoTeam! Below is the most simplified version of the pattern that I could develop. I’ve also included some helpful photos to get you through the trickier parts. Let me know what you think!

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is worked from the toe up to the cuff. Take the time to make sure you get the snugness right in the toe – it really makes a huge impact on how the rest of the body of the sock will fit up against your foot. I struggled here when I was developing this pattern which caused me to frog no less than 4 pair before I was happy with it.

You can adjust the width of the sock in increments of 2 sts.

Gauge:

4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) 16 sc x 19 rows with 4.5 mm crochet hook

Finished measurements:

Length of the foot should be fit to size. Length of the leg is approx 9in including the cuff.

Abbreviations:

RND: Round

CH = Chain

Sts: Stitches

SC = Single crochet

DC = Double crochet

SK: Skip

FPDC: Front post double crochet

BPDC: Back post double crochet

Pattern:

Toe:

With PINK, ch 7

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, continue to work next stitches on the opposite side of the ch, sc in ea ch across (12)

Rnd 2: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st (you should now be back to your first 2sc at the beginning of this round) (16)

Rnd 3: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st (20)

Rnd 4: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st (24)

Rnd 5: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st (28)

[Begin testing the snugness of the toe on the tip of your toes, you want it to barely reach all 5 toes. It will seem like it will fit too tight but TRUST ME, this pattern will loosen as you work it up. If this starts to fit for you, move on to Rnd 8]

Rnd 6: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in next st (32)

Rnd 7: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next st (36)

Rnds 8-10: Sc in ea sc around.

Rnd 11: sc in next 9 sts, change to white (this partial round will allow us to hide the seam created when we swap colours to be under the foot.

Foot:

Begin working stripes. Each colour block will work the seed stitch for 2 rounds:

Rnd 12: *sc, dc* repeat from * around

Rnd 13: *dc, sc* repeat from * around, change colour but do not bind off, hold the first colour behind the work so you can alternate in 2 rounds

Repeat Rnd 12 & 13, alternating colours, until the length of the toe portion reaches a 1/4in before your heel. In my case, I completed 9 colour blocks.

Create gap for heel:

Work one final colour block that will split to create the space for the heel. If you adjusted the toe size, take note of the st adjustments in [] below.

Rnd 1: *sc, dc* repeat from * around

Rnd 2: *dc, sc* repeat from * over next 27 sts [or 3/4 of your remaining sts if you adjusted toe size]. You should now be back on the side of your sock. Change colour.

Rnd 3: Ch 18 sts [or 1/2 of your remaining sts if you adjusted toe size], sk 18 [or 1/2 of your remaining sts if you adjusted toe size], continue in seed st pattern around until you return to the ch18 start *dc, sc* repeat from * to start of chain. Continue in seed stitch pattern (dc, sc) over the next 9 ch [or 1/4 of your remaining sts if you adjusted toe size], end round. See picture of this step below.

Rnd 4: Continue in seed stitch pattern over the remaining 9 sts [or 1/4 of your remaining sts if you adjusted toe size] on ch and remaining 27sts [or 3/4 of your remaining sts if you adjusted toe size]. Change colour

Begin working the leg. Continue working stripes in seed st pattern:

Rnd 1: *sc, dc* repeat from * around

Rnd 2: *dc, sc* repeat from * around,

Work 12 more blocks of stripes or until the leg is 7in long. Change to Pink.

Cuff:

Rnd 1: With pink, ch2, dc in each st across, join with a slst to the top of the ch2 at start.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, *FPDC, BPDC* repeat from * around, join with a slst to the top of the ch 2 start

Repeat Rnd 1 5 more times making sure your FPDC are always aligned with the previous rnd FPDC, and same with BPDC. Bind off. Weave in ends.

Heel:

With right-side facing, join pink with slst in 1st st* of heel opening. (This will be the stitch at the very right, on the bottom of the opening)

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in ea st to chs, over chs work. Do not join. Heel is worked in a spiral. 36 sc [or total sts if you adjusted toe size]

Rnd 2 (dec): (Sc2tog in 1st 2 sts, sc in next 16 )2x. 32st

Rnds 3-12 (dec): (Sc2tog in 1st 2 sts, sc to next dec)2x. 14 sc remain after last round – 7 on top, 7 on bottom)

At the end of last round, finish off keeping a long tail to sew heel shut. Sew heel shut.

Enjoy!
