Beginner Knit Stitch Guide
Are you new to knitting and looking for a place to start? Check out these simple stitches to get you going! They are all based on alternating knit and purl stitches to produce a different look for your project. Have a question or want something more advanced? Stitch Patterns:
Garter Stitch:
Knit all rows
Stockinette:
Row 1 (Right side): Knit
Row 2: Purl
Repeat rows 1-2
Moss Stitch:
Knitted with an odd number of stitches:
Both sides are the same, no wrong side.
Row 1: Knit 1, Purl 1
Repeat row 1
Chevron:
Knitted in a multiple of 8 sts and a 4-row repeat.
Row 1 (Right side): *Purl 1, knit 3; rep from * to end
Row 2: *Knit 1, purl 5, k1, p1; rep from * to end
Row 3: *Knit 2, p1, k3, p1, knit 1; repeat from the * to end
Row 4: *Purl 2, k1, p 1, k 1, p3; repeat from * to end
Basketweave:
Knitted in a multiple of 8, +2 sts and a 8-row repeat.
Row 1 (Wrong side): Purl 2 * knit 6, purl 2; repeat from * to end.
Row 2 (Right side): Knit 2, * purl 6, knit 2; repeat from * to end.
Row 3: As Row 1.
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: Knit 4, purl 2, * knit 6, purl 2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, knit 4.
Row 6: Purl 4, knit 2, * purl 6, knit 2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, purl 4.
Row 7: As Row 5.
Row 8: Knit.
Seersucker:
Knitted in a multile of 4 sts, + 1 and a 8-row repeat.
Row 1: Knit 1, * purl 1, knit 1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: Purl 1, * knit 1, purl 1; rep from * to end.
Row 3: Purl 1, * knit 3, purl 1; rep from * to end.
Row 4: Knit 1, * purl 3, knit 1; rep from * to end.
Row 5: Knit 1, * purl 1, knit 1 rep from * to end.
Row 6: Purl 1, * knit 1, purl 1; rep from * to end.
Row 7: Knit 2, * purl 1, knit 3; rep from * to last 3 sts, purl 1, knit 2.
Row 8: Purl 2, * knit 1, purl 3; rep from * to last 3 sts, knit 1, purl 2
