Crochet Leg Warmers — Full-Length Mesh Stitch Pattern
These crochet leg warmers are the perfect winter cozy companion — full-length, soft, and designed to be worn from above your knee past the heel of your foot. The crochet leg warmers pattern uses front post and back post double crochet ribbing for stretchy bands at the top and bottom, with an airy mesh stitch in between. They’re slouchy, warm, and surprisingly easy to make even if you’re a beginner crocheter.
This crochet leg warmers pattern was originally designed in partnership with KnitCrate as part of their December issue. Worked in DK weight yarn at approximately 26 inches long, they pair perfectly with boots, leggings, or thigh-high socks for that cozy autumn-into-winter layered look. Beginner-friendly and a satisfying project that works up quickly. 🍂

Pattern Notes
This crochet leg warmers pattern is worked in rounds starting from the top of the leg warmer. Each round ends with a sl st to the top of the first stitch in the beginning of the round. The pattern is designed to sit right above the knee and down to cover the top of your arch. You can adjust the fit by increasing/decreasing the width of the band in increments of 2 stitches.
To estimate if the top band will fit, ch the first 55 sts and wrap it around your knee — it should be snug (it will loosen up a bit as you work the pattern). If it’s too tight or loose, increase or decrease by 2 st increments. The pattern remains the same regardless.
Abbreviations
- Sl st — slip stitch
- Ch — chain
- Dc — double crochet
- FPDC — front post double crochet
- BPDC — back post double crochet

Tips for the Perfect Crochet Leg Warmers
- Check your fit early: chain the first 55 sts and wrap around your knee before committing to the full length. Adjust by 2 sts as needed.
- Use stitch markers: mark every round so you can count progress without unrolling the work.
- Block before wearing: gentle steam-blocking gives the crochet leg warmers a smooth, professional finish.
- Practice FPDC/BPDC: if these techniques are new, practice a small swatch first. The ribbing pattern needs both to work properly.
- Try different colors: ombre yarn, color-block stripes, or solid colors all look great with this pattern.
- Match with a hat: use leftover yarn to make a coordinating beanie like the Ombre Pony Beanie.
- Knit version available: if you prefer knit, we have a matching pattern — see related patterns below.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do these crochet leg warmers take to make? About 12-18 hours per pair. The mesh stitch is quick once you find the rhythm.
Are these beginner-friendly? Yes — the crochet leg warmers only use chain, double crochet, FPDC, and BPDC. If you can do those four techniques, you can make this pattern.
Why use front post and back post double crochet? FPDC/BPDC ribbing creates extra stretchy, snug bands that hold the crochet leg warmers in place without elastic.
What yarn substitutes work? Any DK weight (#3) yarn — wool, wool blends, or acrylic all work. Patons Classic Wool DK, Vidalana Lofti, or any 274yd skein.
Can I make them shorter? Yes — just reduce the body length before binding off. For knee-high (not over-the-knee) leg warmers, work to 16 inches instead of 24.
Why did you move this to Etsy? Creating, testing, and refining each pattern takes significant time. Moving the patterns to Etsy lets me sustainably keep designing new ones for you.
