If you’re looking to add a little patriotic charm to your summer cookouts, Memorial Day gatherings, or 4th of July celebrations — this little Patriotic Crochet flower Pattern is the perfect project. They work up in about 15-20 minutes each, use just a small amount of cotton yarn, and they’re versatile enough to use as coasters, string into a festive garland, or scatter as table decor. The pattern is beginner-friendly and uses just one flower design that can be made in any color you’d like.

This post combines two crochet projects in one — the same flower pattern used to make individual coasters AND a strung-up garland with pom poms on the ends. Make a few flower or a whole bunch, and decide which application (or both!) works for your space.

The Patriotic Crochet Flower Pattern:

This is the base pattern used for both the coasters AND the garland. Make one Flower to use as a coaster, or make a bunch and string them together for the garland.

Round 1: Create a magic circle. Ch 1, work 10 hdc into the loop. Join with ss to top of first hdc. (10 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around. Join with ss to top of first hdc. (20 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* — repeat from * to * around. Join with ss. (30 sts)

Round 4: Ch 1, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st* — repeat from * to * around. Join with ss. (40 sts)

Round 5: Ch 1, *hdc in next 7 sts, 2 hdc in next st* — repeat from * to * around. Join with ss. (45 sts)

Round 6 (the flower points): Ch 1, *sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 tc in next st, 3 dtr in next st, 2 tc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st* — repeat from * to * around for 5 flower points. Join with ss. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

That’s it! You should have a perfect 5-pointed flower. Repeat this pattern in red, white, and blue (or any colors that suit your style) until you have as many flowers as you need.

Application 1: Patriotic Crochet Flower Pattern Coasters

If you’re making coasters, you’re done! Each completed flower is a coaster. Make a set of 4-6 in alternating red, white, and blue for a patriotic table set, or stick with a single color for a more subtle look.

Tip: If you want sturdier, more absorbent coasters, try blocking them lightly after weaving in your ends. A quick spray with water and a light press with your fingers will set the points neatly.

Application 2: Flower garland

Once you have your flowers made (I used 9 flowers for my garland in alternating colors, but you can make as many as you’d like), here’s how to assemble the garland:

  1. Decide how long you’d like your garland to be and how many flowers you want to use. I spaced mine roughly 8 inches apart.
  2. Create a simple cord by chaining around 250 stitches — or enough chain to fit your flowers at your preferred spacing.
  3. Tie the cord to the top point of each flower, right at the center of the point. Space them evenly along the cord.
  4. Make 2 pom poms — one for each end of the garland. To make pom poms, wrap yarn around 3 fingers (or use a pom pom maker for cleaner results) until you have a thick bundle. Tie tightly in the middle, cut the loops, and trim into a round shape. Mix red, white, and blue strands together in each pom for an extra festive look.
  5. Attach a pom pom to each end of the garland by tying it on with the leftover cord.
  6. Hang and enjoy! The garland looks beautiful on a mantle, in a doorway, draped along a porch railing, or hung as a backdrop for photos.
