The Easiest Crochet Hat Pattern — Free Beginner Beanie
I promise you — this is the easiest hat you will ever make. It comes together as a simple ribbed rectangle that you sew into a beanie, which means no working in the round, no complicated shaping, and no experience required. If you can chain and half double crochet, you can make this hat.
This pattern was originally designed for Hat-Not-Hate — a project that means a lot to me. The movement raises awareness and spreads kindness through handmade hats, and I wanted to do my part to support it. Whether you’re making this for Hat-Not-Hate or just need a quick beginner-friendly beanie, this pattern has you covered. 🧡

Ch 51
row 1. HDC in 2nd ch from hook across, ch 1, turn (50 hdc)
row 2. HDC in (BLO) in each hdc across, ch 1, turn (50 hdc)
Repeat row 2 until length, laid flat (no not stretch) measures 15in.

Step 3. Fold up brim of the hat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this really beginner friendly?
Yes — if you can chain and half double crochet, you can make this hat. Working in the back loop only creates the ribbed texture and it’s easier than it sounds. The YouTube tutorial shows every step.
Can I adjust the size?
Yes! You can make the hat wider or narrower by increasing or decreasing your starting chain in increments of 2. Make it longer or shorter by working more or fewer rows before your finished length reaches 15″.
What yarn works best for this pattern?
Any fine weight (#2) baby yarn works beautifully — soft, lightweight, and perfect for a hat that will be worn close to the face. I used Bernat Softee Baby and loved the result.
How long does this take to make?
Most people finish this in 1–2 hours. It’s a great project for an evening in front of the TV or a quick handmade gift.
What is Hat-Not-Hate?
Hat-Not-Hate is a movement that spreads kindness and raises awareness through handmade hats. This pattern was originally designed to support the cause — you can look them up to find out more about where to send your finished hats.
