Baby’s First Pumpkin/Jack-O-Lantern Crochet Beanie Pattern
My baby girl was exactly four weeks old when I made her this little pumpkin beanie — I couldn’t help myself, I had to add her to our growing pumpkin patch. Then Hudson saw it and immediately wanted one too, but with a “happy face” for Halloween. So this pattern does both — a sweet little pumpkin or a full Jack-O-Lantern, depending on which tiny person you’re making it for. 🎃
It’s beginner friendly, works up in a snap, and is honestly one of the most photographed things I’ve ever made. A baby in a pumpkin beanie is basically irresistible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes — the beanie uses basic crochet stitches including single crochet, half double crochet, and slip stitch. If you’ve made a basic hat before this will feel very familiar. New to crochet? Check out our Beginner Crochet Stitch Guide first.
Can I make this for an older baby or toddler?
Absolutely — the pattern includes clear sizing adjustment notes. Add 4 stitches per inch for height and 4 rows per inch for circumference. Just make sure you’re working to the correct gauge.
Do I need to make the Jack-O-Lantern face?
Nope — the plain pumpkin version is just as adorable and works beautifully as a general autumn or harvest hat too. The face is completely optional. My daughter wore the plain pumpkin version and Hudson requested the happy Jack-O-Lantern face — both are in the pattern.
