Knit Cable Leg Warmers — Free Pattern with Right-Cross Cable for Kids & Adults
Keep warm this winter with these knit cable leg warmers! Worked in the round on circular needles with a classic right-cross cable down the front, the knit cable leg warmers pattern is sized for an average woman but scales easily up or down for any size. The original photo features my 3-year-old niece — I sized them down by casting on just 30 stitches and keeping the cable stitch as written. The trick is to always keep the cable stitch exactly as listed below and let the additional or fewer stitches come out of the stockinette body around it.
This knit cable leg warmers pattern is the perfect intro-to-cables project — small enough to commit to but with enough yardage to really master the right-cross cable rhythm. Cuffs at top and bottom, ribbed for staying-put fit, and the cable runs the full length for that classic chunky-knit aesthetic.

Pattern Details
The knit cable leg warmers pattern is worked in the round on circular needles from the bottom cuff up. The cable section runs front-and-center down the length of each warmer with a stockinette body wrapping around the leg.
Skill Level
Beginner-intermediate. Requires k, p, knitting in the round, ribbing (k2/p2), and a basic right-cross cable.
Sizing
Cast on 52 stitches for an average woman size. For a child (3-year-old size), cast on 30 stitches. For larger sizes, add stitches in multiples of 4 — always keep the cable section (10 stitches) as written.
Finished Length
Approximately 13.5 inches from cast-on to top cuff for adult size. Adjust length to your preference.

The knit cable leg warmers pattern works in any chunky weight yarn. Bernat Softee Chunky is soft, affordable, and shows off cable definition beautifully. Any worsted-to-bulky yarn substitutes well — adjust needle size to match gauge.

The Knit Cable Leg Warmers Pattern
Cast On
Cast on 52 stitches. Note: Tubular cast-on is recommended; if using tubular, cast on 26, place stitch marker, then remaining stitches.
Bottom Cuff
Join in the round by knitting into the first cast-on stitch from the last cast-on stitch.
Row 1: *k2, p2* repeat from * to the end of the round.
Repeat Row 1 until the cuff measures approximately 2 inches from the cast-on edge.
Body (Cable Section)
Note: Make all cable rows using a Right Cross (RC).
Cable Row: p2, transfer 3 stitches to the cable holder, k3, transfer cable holder stitches to the left needle, k3, p2, knit until 2 stitches before the marker, p2.
Regular Row: k6, p2, knit until 2 stitches before the marker, p2.
Repeat the cable row every 8th row until the piece measures approximately 13.5 inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a cable row.
Top Cuff
Row 1: p2, *k6, p2, knit until 2 stitches before the marker, p2.* Repeat from * for the next 7 rows.
Row 9: Cable row.
Rows 10-18: Repeat Row 1 for the next 8 rows.
Finishing
Bind off in pattern (k2, p2 ribbing). Weave in all ends with your yarn needle.
Repeat the entire pattern to make the second leg warmer.
Enjoy your finished knit cable leg warmers!
Tips for the Perfect Knit Cable Leg Warmers
- Scale for any size: add or remove stitches in multiples of 4 from the body — always keep the cable section as written.
- Use a cable holder: a proper cable stitch holder makes the right-cross cleaner than a spare DPN, but either works.
- Mark the cable row: place a row counter or note where you are in the 8-row cable cycle so you don’t miss a cable.
- Cable tension: pull the first stitch after the cable extra-snug to avoid loose stitches at the cable transition.
- Tubular cast-on for stretchy cuffs: if you know how, use a tubular cast-on for the bottom and bind-off for an extra-elegant edge.
- Match a pair: mirror the cable direction on the second warmer (use a Left Cross instead of Right Cross) for a perfectly mirrored pair.
- Customize length: over-knee, knee-length, or ankle — add or remove cable repeats to hit your desired length.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does this knit cable leg warmers pattern take? About 4-6 hours per warmer, so 8-12 hours total for a pair.
Is this beginner-friendly? Beginner-intermediate. You need to be comfortable knitting in the round and following ribbing. The cable is the only “new” skill, and it’s an easy one.
What yarn weight should I use? Chunky (#5) gives the photographed result. Worsted (#4) makes a sleeker, more fitted warmer.
Can I make these for a child? Yes — cast on 30 stitches (instead of 52) and keep the cable section as written. Adjust length to fit.
Do I have to use circular needles? Circular needles work best for knitting in the round. DPNs work too but switching needles is fiddlier.
Why does my cable look uneven? Most common: you’re holding the cable stitches to the wrong side. For a Right Cross, hold to the BACK of the work, not the front.
Can I sell finished leg warmers? Yes — small batch sales are allowed for personal income. Please credit SeeLoveShare as the designer.
