Plush Gingerbread Man — Free Crochet Christmas Pattern
This plush gingerbread man is the perfect handmade holiday decoration — squishy, cuddly, and irresistibly cute! Depending on yarn weight (and matching hook based on yarn label), this plush gingerbread man can be used as an ornament, holiday pillow, or sweet snuggly toy for the munchkins in your life. I’ve been making mine with super bulky weight yarn, an L hook, and stuffing it as a toy for all the kids around me. Each one turns out just a little different — and that’s the magic of handmade. 🍪✨
The plush gingerbread man works up as two identical pieces (front and back) that are seamed together and stuffed. Body, arms, and legs are all worked in one continuous piece, which means no fiddly assembly — just one finishing round to join the two halves. Decorate with buttons, embroidery, or beads for that final cookie-cutter sweetness.

Tips for the Perfect Plush Gingerbread Man
- Choose a chenille yarn: the plush gingerbread man is at its squishiest in a chenille like Bernat Blanket Yarn. The fuzzy texture also hides minor stitch imperfections.
- Don’t skip the 12″ prep cut: cutting that length of brown yarn before starting saves a major headache when joining the second arm.
- Stuff firmly: firmly-stuffed plush toys hold their shape longer. Under-stuffed plush gingerbread men sag and lose their character.
- Scale the size: for a Christmas ornament, use DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook. For a giant snuggle plush, use super bulky like the materials list above.
- Use safety eyes for kids’ toys: if the plush gingerbread man is destined for a small child, swap buttons for embroidered features or safety eyes to avoid choking hazards.
- Stitch the trim loosely: the white trim round looks best with relaxed slip stitches — too tight and it pulls the edges in.
- Make a whole batch: the plush gingerbread man works up quickly in super bulky — make a set of 3 or 5 for a darling holiday mantle display.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the plush gingerbread man take to make? About 4-6 hours for the super bulky version, including stuffing and finishing.
Is this beginner-friendly? Beginner-intermediate. The plush gingerbread man uses sc, sc2tog, and basic shaping. The arm-join step takes some focus but isn’t difficult.
Can I make this smaller for an ornament? Yes — swap to DK or worsted yarn with a corresponding smaller hook (3.5-5mm). A worsted-weight plush gingerbread man comes out around 7-8 inches tall.
What yarn works besides Bernat Blanket? Any super bulky #6 yarn — Loops & Threads Charisma, Lion Brand Hometown USA, or doubled worsted held with worsted all work.
What if I make a mistake on the arms? Don’t stress — the 12-inch prep strand is just for the second arm. If you forget it, you can always join in fresh yarn at the start of Row 11 and fasten off after the chain step.
Can I sell finished plushies? Yes — small batch sales are allowed for personal income with this plush gingerbread man pattern. Please credit SeeLoveShare as the designer.
