These little ornaments work up quickly so make one or many this holiday season! Try them out in different colours and hang them on your tree as an ornament or string them together to make a garland. Bonus – they also make for adorable gift tags!

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is made up of two different patterns – the star + the Christmas tree. The Christmas Tree is worked in BLO : Back loops only unless otherwise noted.

The star is worked in rounds where the tree is worked in rows. 

Measurements:

Each ornament is approx. 4in wide & tall. Change the gauge of the yarn to change the size of your ornament!

Materials:

  • #3 light cotton yarn. I used Bernat Softee Baby Cotton in Cotton & Gold
  • 4.00mm U.S G/6 Crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Twine (if making as garland)

Gauge:

  • Crochet Gauge: 16 sc and 20 rows with a 4.0 mm (U.S. G/6) crochet hook

Abbreviations:

Slst: Slip Stitch

Ch: Chain

Sc: Single Crochet

Hdc: Half double crochet

BLO: Back Loop Only

Sts: Stitches

Beg: Beginning

YO: Yarn Over

TR: Treble Crochet

Puff Stitch: 

  1. yo, insert hook into stitch, 
  2. yo and pull through (3 loops). Leave your loops taller so it’s easier to draw through them in in end.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 until you have 7 loops on your hook
  4. yo and pull through all loops

Patterns:

Christmas Tree:

With Cotton: Ch 3, join with slst to first ch to form loop. 

Row 1: 3 sc within center, ch 1, turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: Sc in BLO in the first stitch, 2 sc in BLO in the center, sc in BLO in the last st stitch, ch 1, turn. (4 sts)

Row 3: Sc in BLO over next 2 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc in BLO to end, ch 1, turn (5 sts) 

Row 4: Sc in BLO over next 2 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc in BLO in the next 2 sc, ch 1, turn (6 sts)

Row 5: Sc in BLO over next 3 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc in BLO in the next 2 sc, ch 1, turn (7 sts)  

Row 6: Sc in BLO over next 3 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc in BLO in the next 3 sc, ch 1, turn (8 sts) 

Row 7: Sc in BLO over next 4 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc in BLO in the next 3 sc, ch 1, turn (9 sts)

Row 8: Sc in BLO over next 4 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc in BLO in the next 4 sc, ch 1, turn (10 sts).

Row 9: Sc in BLO over next 5 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc BLO in in the next 4 sc, ch 1, turn (11 sts) 

Row 10: Sc in BLO over next 5 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc BLO in in the next 5 sc, ch 1, turn (12 sts)  

Row 11: Sc in BLO over next 6 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc BLO in in the next 5 sc, ch 1, turn (13 sts)  

Row 12: Sc in BLO over next 6 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc BLO in in the next 6 sc, ch 1, turn (14 sts)  

Row 13: Sc in BLO over next 7 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc BLO in in the next 6 sc, ch 1, turn (15 sts)  

Row 14: Sc in BLO over next 7 sc, 2 sc in BLO in the next sc, sc BLO in in the next 7 sc, ch 1, turn (16 sts)  

Add trunk: with Gold, locate the middle of the tree (would be the last 2 sc in BLO from last round) and join with a slst just one st right of the center, ch 1, sc in same st, sc over next 3 sts, ch 1, turn. 

Row 2-3: sc in each st across. 

Bind off and weave in ends.

Star:

With choice of colour: Ch 5, join with a slst to beg ch to form a ring, ch1 (does not count as a stitch)

Rnd 1:  Work (puff stitch, ch1) in ring – Repeat 4 more times, join with a slip stitch to top of first puff st (5 puff sts and 5 ch-1 spaces)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *puff stitch, ch 1, puff stitch, ch 1* in each ch-1 sp around, join with a slst to top of first puff stitch (10 puff sts and ch-1 spaces).

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *hdc, dc, dc, 1 tr, ch 3, 1 tr, dc, dc, hdc* in same ch-1 space, slst in next ch-1 space *, (hdc, dc, dc, 1 tr, ch 3, 1 tr, dc, dc, hdc) in next ch-1 space, slst in ch-1 space * Repeat around, join with a slip stitch to beg stitch.

Bind off and weave in ends.

Garland Assembly:

Make a combination of 6-8 Trees & Stars depending on length of garland. With Twine, weave at the top of the tree and corner of star, leaving around 6in slack between ornaments.
