Intermediate — perfect for crocheters with some experience. The pattern uses bobble stitches, intarsia colour changes, and basic shaping & finishing.

Finished Size

The pattern is written for a 16×16 inch pillow and is easily resized for larger pillow forms by adding rounds of edging. I added 3 rounds of edging to fit an 18×18 pillow form. The pattern includes detailed notes on scaling up.

4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm) = 12 sc and 15 rows with a 5.5 mm (US I/9) crochet hook

Materials You’ll Need

Yarn (#4 Medium)

The pattern is shown in Red Heart Super Saver in these colours:

  • White (Main Colour): 2 balls — 198g / 7oz, 333m / 364yd each (background of the pillow)
  • Hunter Green (Contrast Colour): 1 ball — 198g / 7oz, 338m / 370yd (the wreath itself)
  • Cherry Red: 1 ball — 198g / 7oz, 338m / 370yd (the berries and back panel)

You can absolutely customize the colour palette — try cream and sage for a more modern aesthetic, or cream and burgundy for a luxe feel. Any worsted (#4) yarn will work.

The Bobble Stitch & Intarsia Technique

This pillow uses two techniques in combination:

The Bobble Stitch

The wreath texture comes from the classic bobble stitch — a raised cluster of incomplete double crochets all worked into the same stitch, then pulled closed in one motion. Bobbles are worked only on even (wrong side) rows so they pop out on the right side of the work.

How to work a bobble: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Repeat that step four more times into the SAME stitch so you have five not-quite-complete dc stitches with six loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all six loops to close the bobble.

Intarsia Colourwork

Intarsia crochet uses multiple colours in a single row to create a specific design — in this case, the wreath shape with berries. The pattern is written out row-by-row but you can also follow the colour chart. Each square on the chart represents one stitch (either single crochet or bobble).

Bobbles are worked on EVEN rows (wrong side) in the contrast colour. When the pattern indicates a bobble, you do the colour change at the same time. For simplicity, you can bind off the contrast colour after every even row and reattach at the next even row — this saves you from carrying the yarn across two rows.

Tips for Clean Colour Changes

  1. Finish the last stitch with the old colour: Work until there are two loops on your hook with the old colour.
  2. Yarn over with the new colour: Before completing the last stitch with the old colour, yarn over with the new colour.
  3. Pull through loops: Finish the last stitch by pulling through the last two loops with the new colour.
  4. Secure the old colour: Once you’ve changed colours, secure the yarn of the old colour by either crocheting over the tail or by weaving it in later.

Clean colour transitions are what separate an amateur-looking pillow from a designer-quality one. Worth the extra few seconds at each colour change.

Finishing & Assembly Notes

Once both the front and back panels are complete, edge each panel with single crochet to ensure clean, even seams when joining. You can increase the finished size by adding more rounds of edging — perfect if your pillow insert is slightly larger than the standard 16×16.

The pattern includes detailed instructions for joining the panels with the pillow insert tucked inside, including options for leaving the closure removable (so you can wash the cover separately) or stitching it permanently closed.
