Brace yourself, these little cuties are most versatile holiday mini-project. Think Christmas ornament, decorative pillow, garland, wreath, hostess gift, present name tag… I could go on. Change the gauge of the yarn and change the application. We’ll also walk you through how to work them up so you can make as many as you like in no time!

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is flexible and can be made with any type of yarn and the matching hook size on the yarn packaging. The photos as detailed throughout the pattern match the yarn and gauge in the materials section.

Measurements:

Approx. 7in tall, 5in wide.

Materials:

  • #3 Light Yarn for main colour and trim. I used Bernat Softee Baby Cotton in Sand (body) and Cotton (trim)
  • 4.0 mm (U.S. G/6) crochet hook
  • Poly fill stuffing
  • Buttons, beads, etc. eyes and body 
  • Tapestry needle 

Gauge:

4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) 16 sts and 20 rows with a 4.0 mm crochet hook

Abbreviations:

Ch: Chain

Sc: Single crochet

St: stitch

Sc2tog: Single Crochet two sts together

Slst: Slip stitch

Pattern:

IMPORTANT: Cut a 12” length of brown yarn before begin. This will be used for the second arm.

Make 2 of full bodies per gingerbread man.

Head:

With brown, ch 4.

Row 1: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in the next ch, 2 sc in the last ch; ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 2: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 3 the last sc; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 3: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 5 the last sc; ch 1, turn. (9 sc)

Row 4: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 7 the last sc; ch 1, turn. (11 sc)

Rows 5-6: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (11 sc)

Row 7: Sc2tog the first 2 sc, sc in each of the dec over the last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (9 sts)

Row 8: Sc2tog the first 2 sc, sc in each of the dec over the last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (7 sts)

Row9: Sc2tog the first 2sc, sc in each of the dec over the last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (5 sts)

Row 10: Sc in each sc across; ch 8, turn. (5 sc + 8 ch)

Arms:

Before beginning row 11, attach the 12” length of yarn with a slst to the first sc on row 10; ch 7. Fasten off 12” length of yarn.

Row 11: 2 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the next 6 ch’s, sc in each of the next 5 sc on the head, sc in each of the next 6 ch’s on the attached length of yarn, 2 sc in the last ch; ch 1, turn. (21 sc)

Row 12: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 19 sc, 2 sc in the last sc; ch 1, turn. (23 sc)

Rows 13-14: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (23 sc)

Row 15: Sc2tog over the first 2 sc, sc in each of the next 19 sc, sc dec over the last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (21 sc)

Row 16: Sc2tog over the first 2 sc, sc in each of the next 17 sc, sc dec over the last 2 sc. Fasten off. Turn. (19 sc)

Body:

Row 17: Skip the first 4 sc. Join yarn with a sc to the next sc, sc in each of the next 10 sc; ch 1, turn, leaving remaining stitches unworked. (11 sc)

Row 18: SC in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (11 sc)

Row 19: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 9 sc, 2 sc in the last sc; ch 1, turn. (13 sc)

Rows 20-21: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (13 sc)

Row 22: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 11 sc, 2 sc in the last sc; ch 1, turn. (15 sc)

First Leg:

Row 23: Sc in each of the first 7 sc, leaving the remaining stitches unworked; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 24: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 25: 2 sc in the first sc, sc in each of the next 4 sc, sc dec over the 1st 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Rows 26-27: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 28: Sc dec over the first 2 sc, sc in each of the next 3 sc, sc dec over the last 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 29: Sc dec over the first 2 sc, sc in the next sc, sc dec over the last 2 sc. Fasten off. (3 sc)

Second Leg:

Row 23: Skip the next unworked sc on row 22, attach yarn with a sc to the next unworked sc on row 22, sc in each of the remaining 6 sc; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 24: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Row 25: Sc2tog over the first 2 sc, sc in each of the next 4 sc, 2 sc in the last sc; ch 1, turn. (7 sc)

Rows 26-29: Work as for rows 26-29 of the first leg.

Finishing:

Edging: Stack both bodies on top of each other making sure to match arms and legs. With trim colour, sc both through both pieces together around the edge stuffing evenly as you work edging. Fasten off.

Add embellishments – eyes, mouth, and buttons according to photos below. Bonus Santa Hat pattern to follow.
