Crochet Baby Sweater Pattern — Free Spring Sweater Pattern
Spring is the perfect season for handmade baby projects, and this crochet baby sweater pattern has a special place in my heart — I made it for my friend’s daughter Isla on her first birthday. Worked top-down with a simple raglan construction and sweet two-color stripes, this little sweater comes together quickly in soft Bernat Softee Baby Cotton and is the perfect lightweight layer for cool spring mornings.
The full freecrochet baby sweater pattern is below — sized for both 6 months and 12 months, with a beginner-intermediate skill level and just a handful of stitches. If you can chain, double crochet, and work front and back post stitches, you can absolutely make this sweater.

Tips for success when making the crochet baby sweater pattern
- Carry your contrast color up the side. Since you’re switching colors every 2 rounds, carry the unused yarn loosely up the inside seam rather than fastening off and rejoining each time. It saves time and reduces ends to weave in.
- Don’t twist your foundation chain. When joining your starting ch 56 (60) into a round, double-check the chain is flat and not twisted before slip stitching to join. A twisted foundation will give you a mobius collar instead of a sweater.
- Use a stitch marker for the start of each round. The pattern works in joined rounds, so a marker placed in the first stitch of each round helps you keep track of where the round begins.
- Try it on as you go. One of the best things about top-down construction is that you can slip the work over baby’s head at any point to check fit and length. Adjust the body and sleeve length to your little one’s proportions.
- Block before gifting. Wet blocking softens the cotton and evens out the stitches beautifully. Pin to schematic measurements on a flat surface and let dry fully.
Frequently asked questions about the crochet baby sweater pattern
Is this crochet baby sweater pattern beginner-friendly?
It’s rated intermediate because it uses front and back post stitches, color changes, and works in joined rounds with raglan increases. If you’re comfortable with double crochet and willing to learn a couple of new techniques, you can absolutely make this. The hardest part is the first body round with all the V stitches — once you’ve worked through the raglan setup, the rest of the sweater is rhythmic and relaxing.
Can I make this sweater in a single color?
Absolutely. The construction works exactly the same — just skip the color change instructions and use 2 balls of your chosen color. A single-color version is gorgeous and lets the ribbed details at the collar, hem, and cuffs shine.
Can I make a bigger size?
The pattern is written for 6 and 12 months only. To size up, you would need to recalculate the foundation chain (which must be a multiple compatible with the V stitch placement), adjust the V stitch positions on the back panel, and add additional body and sleeve length. It’s possible but takes some math — best for crocheters comfortable with garment customization.
Can I substitute the yarn?
Yes, but check your gauge carefully. Any soft DK or sport weight cotton yarn will work — look for a yarn that gets 16 dc per 4″ with a 3.75mm hook. Cotton is the best choice for a spring sweater because it’s breathable and washable, but a soft acrylic or wool blend will also work for cooler seasons.
How long does this crochet baby sweater take to make?
Most crocheters finish this sweater in 8–12 hours of working time, making it a perfect weekend or week-long project. Once you get past the raglan setup, the body and sleeves move quickly.
