I made this throw when I was 8 months pregnant with Hudson — big, uncomfortable, and desperately wanting something cosy to snuggle under during the late night nursing sessions I knew were coming. I needed a blanket large enough to actually cover both of us but not so enormous that we’d get buried in it at 3am. And I needed a pattern simple enough to knit while exhausted and distracted. This was exactly that. 🧶

The Sweet and Simple Knit Throw is a 2 stitch, 2 row repeat — that’s genuinely it. Once you’ve done the first four rows you know the whole pattern. No counting, no complicated instructions, just satisfying rhythmic knitting that produces the most beautiful, soft, textured throw. It’s been one of our most used blankets ever since.

Colour Ideas

I made mine in Pearl which is a soft, warm neutral that goes with absolutely everything. The seed stitch texture really pops in solid colours — the alternating knit and purl stitches create beautiful shadow and dimension. Some of my favourite colourway ideas:

  • 🤍 Pearl or cream — timeless and classic
  • 🩶 Soft grey — modern and versatile
  • 🤎 Warm camel or oatmeal — cosy farmhouse aesthetic
  • 💙 Dusty blue — beautiful for a nursery or bedroom
  • 🩷 Blush pink — soft and feminine

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suitable for a complete beginner?

Yes — if you can knit and purl you can make this throw. The 2 stitch, 2 row repeat is one of the simplest stitch patterns in knitting. New to knitting? Check out our beginner stitch guide first.

Why do I hold two strands together?

Holding two strands together doubles the thickness of the yarn which gives the finished throw a beautiful density and weight — it feels luxurious and substantial rather than thin and flimsy. It also means the project works up much faster than a single strand would.

Can I use a different yarn?

Absolutely — any yarn works as long as you check your gauge. The measurements in this pattern are specific to Bernat Wavelength held double on 10mm needles. If you substitute, swatch first and adjust your cast-on accordingly.

How long does it take to make?

Because you’re working with two strands and large needles this works up surprisingly fast — most knitters complete it over a few evenings. I made mine in the final weeks of pregnancy which tells you everything about how manageable it is!
