This winter snowflake sugar cookie ornament brings the cozy charm of frosted holiday cookies to your tree without the sugar crash. ❄️🍪 Worked in the round with delicate picot points, each ornament looks like a snowflake-cut sugar cookie fresh from the oven — complete with a creamy frosting layer sewn on top. They finish in about 30 minutes and look gorgeous individually, hung as a garland, or paired with the rest of the Sugar Cookie Collection.

The construction is satisfying and quick: two cookie panels are crocheted in light brown with picot points to create that classic six-point snowflake silhouette, joined together for that double-thick “real cookie” feel, then a single frosting layer in soft white gets sewn on top. The result is a chunky, tactile ornament with the unmistakable look of a holiday-cookie-tin snowflake.

Cookie (make 2 — with light brown)

To start, ch 3, join with sl st to first ch to create a loop.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc within loop, ch 2, *2 dc, ch 2 within loop*, repeat from * to * 4 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of starting ch 3. (6 dc clusters with 6 ch-2 spaces)
  • Rnd 2: Sl st in next dc from prior rnd, sl st within ch-2 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-2 sp, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all within next ch-2 sp*, repeat around. Join with a sl st to beginning ch 3.
  • Rnd 3: Sl st in next dc from prior rnd, sl st within ch-2 sp, ch 3, work 2 dc within same ch-2 sp, ch 3, sl st between clusters from prior rnd, *ch 3, work 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, sl st between clusters from prior rnd*, repeat from * to * to end. Join with a sl st to top of beginning st.

FIRST COOKIE: Fasten off here.

SECOND COOKIE ONLY: Sl st in prior round’s dc sts until you return to first ch-3 sp. Begin the combined edging/joining round on the second cookie (see below). Do not fasten off.

Edging & joining (combined — works through both cookies)

Place both cookies on top of each other with right sides facing outward. Working through both layers, complete this round to edge AND join the cookies in one step:

  • 3 sc within ch-3 sp
  • *Sl st in sl st from prior rnd, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp, then over the 3-dc cluster from the prior rnd work: hdc in first dc, [dc, ch 3, sl st to first ch, dc] all within 2nd dc (this creates the picot point), hdc in 3rd dc. 3 sc in next ch-3 sp*
  • Repeat from * to * around to the final dc cluster (where the slip stitches were placed at the beginning of the round)
  • Final cluster: hdc in first dc, [dc, ch 3, sl st to first ch, dc] all within first sl st, hdc in 2nd sl st
  • Fasten off and weave in ends

Frosting (make 1 — with white)

To start, ch 3, join with sl st to first ch to create a loop.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc within loop, ch 2, *2 dc, ch 2 within loop*, repeat from * to * 4 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of starting ch 3.
  • Rnd 3: Sl st in next dc, *work (sc, hdc, ch 3, sl st to 1st ch, hdc, sc) all within ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st between clusters from prior rnd (as you did on the cookie), ch 2*, repeat from * to * around. Sl st between final dc cluster.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to attach the frosting to the cookie.

Assembly

  1. Center the frosting on top of the joined cookie. You should see an even border of cookie all the way around the frosting.
  2. Sew the frosting down with the long tail and tapestry needle, working through both the frosting and the front cookie layer only.
  3. Weave in all remaining ends.
  4. Add a hanging hook at the top of the snowflake and you’re ready to hang!

Tips for success

  • Identify the points first — the six dc clusters become the six points of the snowflake. Knowing where they are makes the edging round much easier to follow
  • Match your tension — keep tension consistent across both cookies so they align cleanly when joined
  • Watch the picots — the [dc, ch 3, sl st to first ch, dc] sequence creates a small point at each snowflake tip. Pull the picot tight for crisp definition
  • Center the frosting carefully — leave an even cookie border visible all the way around for that “real iced cookie” look
  • Consider stiffening — for a crisper finished ornament, lightly spritz with a fabric stiffener or sugar-water mix and let dry flat

Customization ideas

  • Classic cream & brown — Bernat Softee Baby Cotton in Sand + Cotton (as photographed)
  • Pure white snowflake — all white cookie + all white frosting for a snow-on-snow effect
  • Pastel winter — cream cookie with icy blue or silver frosting
  • Gingerbread snowflake — deeper warm brown cookie with crisp white frosting for a holiday cookie tin look
  • Embellished frosting — add tiny seed bead “sprinkles” or a single jingle bell at the center for sparkle
  • Mini garland — make 6–8 snowflakes and string together with twine for a coordinated mantel garland or tree topper
