Very Berry Christmas Stocking – Free Crochet Pattern
Here is a fun version of a Christmas Stocking! We used fun colours to brighten up the space and take a non-traditional spin on a classic. This version also has a tie so you can keep it closed if you plan on packing it full of goodies (sorry kiddos!). Take a look and let us know what you think! Enjoy!
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked from the toe up to the cuff.
Materials:
- 1 Ball RedHeart Super Saver in:
- White
- Grenadine
- Pool
- Amethyst
- I like Red Heart Super Saver Yarn for projects like these because they’re a great price, durable and come in LOADS of colors).
- Size 5.5 MM crochet hook
- Tapestry Needle
Gauge:
4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) 12 sc and 15 rows with a 5.5 mm (U.S I-9) crochet hook
Finished measurements:
18in long, 8in wide
Abbreviations:
RND: Round
CH = Chain
Sts: Stitches
SC = Single crochet
DC = Double crochet
SK: Skip
FPTC: Front post triple crochet
FPDC: Front post double crochet
BPDC: Back post double crochet
Pattern:
The main pattern is worked up in the Alpine Stitch. You can see an in-depth tutorial of the Alpine stitch in this Spotlight Stitch:
Toe:
With White, ch 16
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, continue to work next stitches on the opposite side of the ch, sc in ea ch across (30)
Rnd 2: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 13 sts, 2 sc in next 2 sc, sc in next 13 sts, 2 sc in next st (you should now be back to your first 2sc at the beginning of this round) (34)
Rnd 3: (2 SC in next st, SC in next 15 sts, 2 sc in next 2 SC, sc in next 15 sts, 2 SC in next st (38)
Rnd 4: (2 SC in next st, SC in next 17 sts, 2 SC in next 2 SC, sc in next 17 sts, 2 SC in next st (42)
Rnd 5: (2 SC in next st, SC in next 19 sts, 2 SC in next 2 SC, sc in next 19 sts, 2 SC in next st (46)
Rnd 6: (2 SC in next st, SC in next 21 sts, 2 SC in next 2 SC, SC in next 21 sts, 2 SC in next st (50)
Rnd 7-10: SC in ea SC around (50)Rnd 10: Change to Pool, DC in each st around, join with a slst to the top of the first DC (50)
Rnd 11: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join with a slst to the top of the first SC (50)
Rnd 12: Change to Amethyst: Ch 2, DC in first stitch, FPTC around the DC two rows below. DC in next st, then FPTC around the next DC two rows down. Alternate DCs and FPTCs to the end of the rnd, join with a slst to the top of the first DC (50)
Rnd 13: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join with a slst to the top of the first SC (50)
Rnd 14: Change to Grenadine: Ch 2, DC in first stitch, FPTC around the DC two rows below. DC in next st, then FPTC around the next DC two rows down. Alternate DCs and FPTCs to the end of the rnd, join with a slst to the top of the first DC (50)
Rnd 15: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join with a slst to the top of the first SC (50)
Repeat Row 14 & 15 making note of the following colour changes:
- Rows 16-17 :Pool
- Rows 18-19: Amethyst
- Rows 20-21: Grenadine
- Rows 22-23: Pool
Begin working heel space for heel:
Rnd 1: Continue with Pool, ch 25, sk 25 sts and join with a slst. Bind off. You are now on the opposite side of the foot.Rnd 2: With Amethyst, return back to the opposite side of the foot, where all the colour changes have occurred. Join with a SLST to where the first ch began from the prior row. Ch3, DC in each 25 ch, continue in pattern: DC in next stitch, FPTC around the DC two rows below. DC in next st, then FPTC around the next DC two rows down. Alternate DCs and FPTCs to the end of the rnd, join with a slst to the top of the first DC (50)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join with a slst to the top of the first SC (50)
Begin working the leg:
Change to Grenadine:
Rnd 1: Change to Grenadine: Ch 2, DC in first stitch, FPTC around the DC two rows below. DC in next st, then FPTC around the next DC two rows down. Alternate DCs and FPTCs to the end of the rnd, join with a slst to the top of the first DC
Rnd 2: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join with a slst to the top of the first SC (50)
Repeat Row 1 & 2 making note of the following colour changes:
Rows 16-17 :Pool
Rows 18-19: Amethyst
Rows 20-21: Grenadine
Rows 22-23: PoolRows 24-25: Amethyst
Rows 26-27: GrenadineRows 28-29 :Pool
Rows 30-31: Amethyst
Rows 32-33: Grenadine
Rows 34-35: Pool
Cuff:
Rnd 1: With White, ch2, dc in each st across, join with a slst to the top of the ch2 at start.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, *FPDC, BPDC* repeat from * around, join with a slst to the top of the ch 2 startRepeat Rnd 2 5 more times making sure your FPDC are always aligned with the previous rnd FPDC, and same with BPDC. Bind off. Weave in ends.
Heel:
With right-side facing, join white with slst in 1st st* of heel opening. (This will be the stitch at the very right, on the bottom of the opening, see picture below)
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in ea st to chs, over chs work. Do not join. Heel is worked in a spiral. 50 sc
Rnd 2 (dec): (Sc2tog in 1st 2 sts, sc in next 17 )2x. 48st
Rnds 3-12 (dec): (Sc2tog in 1st 2 sts, sc to next dec)2x. 28 sc remain after last round – 14 on top, 14 on bottom)At the end of last round, finish off keeping a long tail to sew heel shut. Sew heel shut.
Tie & Tassels:
With white, ch 50, bind off. Weave tie through the first round of white, beginning and ending at the back of the stocking.
Create two poms (in any color of choice). Attach to the ends of the tie.
