Blackberry Stitch Crochet Tutorial — Free Textured 2-Row Stitch Guide
This blackberry stitch crochet tutorial walks you through one of my favourite textured stitches — a simple 2-row repeat that creates plump little “berries” across an otherwise flat fabric. Texture, texture, texture! 🍇
I was playing around with this stitch when I was looking to design a baby blanket — the little berries create such an interesting tactile feel that would totally grab the attention of a curious little one. Once you’ve got the rhythm of the 2-row repeat, you can use blackberry stitch for blankets, throws, scarves, baby gifts, and any project where you want a soft, dimensional fabric.

The video below walks you through the full 2-row repeat. The “berry” effect comes from a single triple crochet popping forward against the surrounding single crochets — once you see it in action, the technique clicks immediately.

What is the blackberry stitch in crochet?
The blackberry stitch in crochet is a textured stitch pattern worked over a 2-row repeat that creates small dimensional “berries” across an otherwise flat fabric. The berries are formed by working a single triple crochet between single crochets — the taller stitch pops forward, creating the bumpy texture that gives the stitch its name. The result is a plush, dimensional fabric perfect for cozy projects.
Why you’ll love the blackberry stitch
- Beginner-friendly — if you can single crochet and triple crochet, you can do blackberry stitch
- Visually impressive — looks far more advanced than it actually is
- Tactile and engaging — the dimensional berries are perfect for baby blankets and tactile projects
- Forgiving — small tension variations don’t show as much as in flat single crochet
- Quick to memorise — just 2 rows to remember, then it flows
Abbreviations
Ch: Chain · Sc: Single Crochet · Tr: Triple Crochet · St: Stitch
Blackberry stitch crochet — written instructions
Foundation: Chain a multiple of 2 stitches (any even number — 20, 30, 50, etc., depending on how wide you want your project).
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in first sc, *tr in next sc, sc in next sc*, repeat from * to end, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-3 for the pattern. Continue until your piece reaches the desired length, ending on a Row 3.
Tips for working the blackberry stitch
- Push your triple crochets forward. The berry effect comes from the triple crochet sitting taller and forward of the single crochets. Don’t pull them flat — let them poke out.
- Keep your tension consistent. Loose tension on the triple crochets makes for plumper berries; tight tension flattens them. Find what looks best for your yarn weight.
- Use a smooth yarn for your first attempt. Avoid super-fuzzy or boucle yarns until you’ve got the stitch down — the texture can hide what your hook is doing.
- Block your finished piece. Like most textured stitches, blackberry stitch looks its best after a gentle wet block. The berries round out and the fabric drapes more beautifully.
- Foundation chain math: Always chain a multiple of 2 stitches. The 2-row repeat alternates between sc and tr stitches, so you need an even count to make it work cleanly.
