This costume features a few more pieces than some of the other costumes — outer ears, inner ears, a custom rounded stump, and embroidered face details. But each piece is genuinely simple on its own, and the result is honestly worth the extra steps. The custom stump (worked in rounds with a little ridge) gives the cat a more polished look than a flat-top pumpkin.

The pattern is written for both knit AND crochet. Pick your craft and let’s make a kitty.

Start with the pumpkin base

Every costume in the Lil Monsters Pumpkin Patch starts with the same simple pumpkin base. The Kitty Cat doesn’t need any pumpkin base color modifications — you’ll make a standard pumpkin base in Pumpkin (orange) yarn. The custom rounded stump is the only modification, and that’s covered separately below.

Crochet cat pumpkin pattern — written instructions

Custom rounded stump (replaces the standard stump)

The cat pumpkin uses a unique rounded stump worked in continuous rounds with a small ridge. This gives the finished pumpkin a polished, “real pumpkin stem” look that pairs beautifully with the kitty ears.

With Coffee (brown), ch 4. Join with sl st in the first ch to form a loop.

Round 1: 6 sc within the loop. (6 sts)
Round 2: Sc in back loops only of each st around (this creates a small ridge around the base of the stump). (6 sts)
Rounds 3–7: Sc in each st around. (6 sts per round)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Lightly stuff the stump with polyfil and attach to the top center of the pumpkin.

Outer ears (make 2)

Each ear is worked flat as a small triangle by decreasing every row.

Crochet version:

  • With Black, ch 9
  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (8 sc)
  • Row 2: Sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1, turn
  • Repeat Row 2 until 2 sts remain
  • Sc2tog. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing

Knit version:

  • With Black, cast on 9 sts
  • Row 1: Knit
  • Row 2: K2tog, knit to end
  • Repeat Row 2 until 2 sts remain
  • K2tog. Bind off, leaving a long tail for sewing

Inner ears (make 2)

Smaller pink triangles that sit on top of the black outer ears.

Crochet version:

  • With Orchid (pink), ch 7
  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch 1, turn (6 sc)
  • Row 2: Sc2tog, sc to end, ch 1, turn
  • Repeat Row 2 until 2 sts remain
  • Sc2tog. Fasten off, leaving a long tail

Knit version:

  • With Orchid (pink), cast on 7 sts
  • Row 1: Knit
  • Row 2: K2tog, knit to end
  • Repeat Row 2 until 2 sts remain
  • K2tog. Bind off, leaving a long tail

Assembly

  1. Attach the rounded stump to the top center of the pumpkin using the long tail and tapestry needle. Sew firmly so it stays upright.
  2. Attach each pink inner ear to a black outer ear. Position the smaller pink triangle centered on top of the black triangle, with about 1/4″ of black showing around the edges. Sew with a tapestry needle, or use a small dab of hot glue.
  3. Sew the assembled ears to the pumpkin on either side of the stump. Position them so they angle slightly outward, like real cat ears. Anchor firmly with the long tails.
  4. Embroider the face. Using black yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider the cat’s face details — typically two eyes (or one eye + one closed/winking eye for character), a small triangular nose just below the eyes, and a few whisker lines. Reference your photo for placement, or design your own kitty expression.
  5. Weave in any remaining ends on the inside of the pumpkin to keep the front clean.
