The witch hat is the most detailed accessory in the patch — a structured cone with a wide flat brim, plus a contrast band that gives it that storybook-witch look. Don’t be intimidated; the rounds (or rows for knit) are straightforward decreases and increases that come together as you work.

The pattern is written for both knit AND crochet. Pick your craft and let’s make a witch.

Crochet witch pumpkin pattern — written instructions

Witch hat (crochet version)

The hat is worked in continuous rounds from the tip down. You’ll start at the very top of the pointed cone, work outward in increases until you reach the band, then flare out into the wide brim.

With Black, ch 4. Join with sl st in the first ch to create a loop.

Rnd 1: 4 sc within the loop. (4 sts)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (8 sts)
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (8 sts)
Rnd 4: *Sc, 2 sc in next st* around. (12 sts)
Rnd 5: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 6: *2 sc, 2 sc in next st* around. (16 sts)
Rnd 7: Sc in each st around. (16 sts)
Rnd 8: *3 sc, 2 sc in next st* around. (20 sts)
Rnd 9: Sc in each st around. (20 sts)
Rnd 10: *4 sc, 2 sc in next st* around. (24 sts)
Rnd 11: Sc in each st around. (24 sts)

Change to Amethyst for the band:

Rnd 12: *5 sc, 2 sc in next st* around. (28 sts)
Rnd 13: Sc in each st around. (28 sts)

Change back to Black for the brim:

Rnd 14: 2 sc in each st around. (56 sts) — this creates the wide flat brim
Rnds 15–19: Sc in each st around. (56 sts per round)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Witch hat (knit version)

The knit hat is worked flat — a triangle that you fold and seam to create the cone shape, then attach the brim.

With Black, cast on 30 sts.

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: *K1, k2tog* repeat to end. (20 sts)
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: K2tog to end. (10 sts)

Change to Amethyst:

Rows 5–7: Knit

Change back to Black:

Rows 8–11: Knit
Row 12: K1, k2tog, k4, k2tog, k1. (8 sts)
Rows 13–15: Knit
Row 16: K1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1. (6 sts)
Rows 17–18: Knit
Row 19: K1, k2tog, k2tog, k1. (4 sts)
Row 20: Knit
Row 21: K2tog, k2tog. (2 sts)

Bind off. Fold the triangle in half lengthwise and sew along the edges to shape the hat.

Assembly

  1. Attach the googly eyes with the hot glue gun first. Position them about a third of the way down from the top, with about an inch of space between them.
  2. Position the hat on top of the pumpkin. Many makers love offsetting it slightly to one side for a jaunty witch-hat look — but center it if you prefer the classic style.
  3. Sew the hat to the pumpkin using a tapestry needle and matching yarn, anchoring around the inside edge of the brim where it meets the pumpkin.
  4. Adjust the cone — you can let the tip flop slightly to one side for a more whimsical look, or stuff a tiny bit of polyfil into the tip to keep it pointing straight up.
