The trick to this costume is the long, simple wrap — just a single 80″ strip of yarn-work that you wind around the pumpkin. The wrap partially covers the eyes for that classic “peeking out from the bandages” mummy look. It’s hot-glued in place so the whole pumpkin stays sturdy and touchable (perfect for households with little hands).

Start with the pumpkin base

Every costume in the Lil Monsters Pumpkin Patch starts with the same simple pumpkin base. The Mummy doesn’t need any color modifications — you’ll make a standard pumpkin base in Pumpkin (orange) yarn with a brown or coffee-colored stump.

Crochet mummy pumpkin pattern — written instructions

Pumpkin base

Follow the simple pumpkin base pattern in Pumpkin (orange) with no modifications. Make the pumpkin base and stump per the main pattern, then move on to the wrap below.

Mummy wrap

The wrap is a long thin strip worked in Aran (off-white) yarn. Both the knit and crochet versions create a similar effect — a strip of fabric about 1″ wide that you wind around the pumpkin.

Crochet version:

  • Ch 4
  • Row 1: Dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch and in last ch, ch 2, turn (3 dc)
  • Row 2 and onward: Dc in each dc across, ch 2, turn (3 dc per row)
  • Continue until the wrap measures 80″ long
  • Fasten off and weave in ends

Knit version:

  • Cast on 3 sts
  • Row 1: Knit to end
  • Repeat Row 1 until the wrap measures 80″ long
  • Bind off and weave in ends

Assembly

  1. Attach the googly eyes with the hot glue gun first. Position them about a third of the way down from the top of the pumpkin, with about an inch of space between them.
  2. Begin wrapping the mummy wrap around the pumpkin. Start at the back, leaving a small tail you’ll secure later.
  3. Cross the wrap over and around the pumpkin in a haphazard, layered pattern — like real bandages, the wraps shouldn’t be perfectly even or parallel.
  4. Make sure to partially cover the eyes as you wrap, leaving them peeking out for that classic mummy look.
  5. Hot glue the wrap in place as you go — secure key points (over the top, around the sides, near the bottom) so the wrap stays put when the pumpkin is handled.
  6. Tuck and glue the ends at the back of the pumpkin to hide them and finish the look.
